What am I reading this month: September and R.I.P X

Hello everyone. I noticed I hadn't done one of this since June!. But today I had the time and also I am using this post as my oficial R.I.P registration, so, let's get into it.

For my reading more in Spanish goal I will be reading Lo que Escondian sus Ojos (What was hidden in her eyes) by  Nieves Herrero. Now, I've tried to keep to Latin American authors for my Spanish reading, mainly because there are a lot of expressions that change, but I've heard good things about this one and it was available at the library, so here we are.
For the Sword and Laser Book Club, we will be reading A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr. I am intrigued by this one, since in their last podcast they mentioned this is one of the first "post apocalyptic" books, so that's definitely interesting.
For my "reading more CanLit" goal and the pick for the Hello Hemlock book club, we will be reading Brown Girl in the Ring by Nalo Hopkinson, which will also go towards my Diversifying 2015 challenge (you can sign up here). I will also be (finally) reading Life of Pi by Yann Martel as a Canadian author.
On nonfiction, I am reading (well, listening) to Origins by Neil deGrasse Tyson. I love the author and the work he does in vulgarization of science, so I am quite exited to listen to this one.

 

Besides those, I will also read Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffeneger. I got this book on a library sale right after I had read The Time Traveler's Wife but I hadn't put myself to reading it.

 

On the other hand,  in case you missed it, this year R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril X will be hosted by The Estella Society and off course I am participating. However, unlike on previous years, I think I am going to play it safe and just go with 2 books, which is Peril the Second.

 

My choices are: Before She Dies by Mary Burton, a mystery that has been sitting on my shelf for years now; and Dear Killer by Katherine Ewell, another mystery but a YA this time. Usually I manage to read a bit more than 2 books for R.I.P X, specially with the Read-A-Thon coming on October, but most of the books I am choosing this month are print and fairly big which reduces my commute reading. But we will see.

Readers Imbibing Peril IX

Autumn is almost here and so that means, my dearest readers, that it is time for the Readers Imbibing Peril IX (R.I.P IX). In case you don't remember or that you are new around here, the main thing about this "challenge" is reading (or watching) anything that follows into the following genres: Mystery, Suspense, Thriller, Dark Fantasy, Gothic, Horror, Supernatural.

 
Or anything sufficiently moody that shares a kinship with the above. That is what embodies the stories, written and visual, that we celebrate with the R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril event. I will highly encourage you to go to Carl's website at Stainless Steel Droppings to check out the "rules". 

This year I will be doing the Peril the First Challenge, which implies reading at least 4 books that fall in the genres mentioned AND for the first time I will also try to do Group Read.

The first books to make the list are:

The Descent by Alma Katu: Book Three of The Taker Trilogy
The Preacher by Camilla Lackberg: I really enjoyed the first on the series, so I have big hopes for this one.  
World War Z by Max Brooks: I figure is about time I get to it and what better time?
Violin by Anne Rice: I bought this book a year ago and haven't read it yet!

This year’s readalong runs from September 1st through October 1st, and the chosen book is Shirley Jackson’s classic, The Haunting of Hill House. I've never read this book so I am quite excited by it
I have some other books in the "maybe" list, including a couples of Novellas, but once again, I'll rather see how this months go and then add extra books to the list. So thre you have it!

        The Nightmare by Lars Kepler: The second installment of the Lars Kepler duo. Last year I read The Hypnotist and I loved it. I got The Nightmare for Christmas, and I have to tell you, it's been really hard not to dive in the second one!

          The Twelve by Justin Cronin: The continuation of the The Passage; once again I was hooked by the first book, albeit it was a big book to read during last year's Read-a-Thon.  It's already reserved at the library and shall be in my hands soon enough.

          The Reckoning by Alma Katsu: The second book from The Taker Trilogy. I won a copy during this spring's Read-a-Thon; unfortunately it hasn't arrived yet :(, but there is a copy at the library, so problem solved.

          Girl of Nightmares by Kendare Blake: The continuation of Anna dressed in Blood. This one I will have to buy, since is not available at the library.

Well that's it for now. Last year I manage to read 6 books for the challenge, but since I'm also part of the Sword & Laser book club now, I don't know what else will be in my reading list. Either way, I'm planning on also doing the Fall Read-a-Thon so the list might change a bit.

R*I*P My first challenge!!!

Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the first challenge I’ve EVER participated. I’m off course not counting my yearly reading challenge, because that’s a goal I give myself every year, but is not a “communal” challenge.

This time however, Miss Grace from Books without anypictures (she has a great blog, you should check it out) talked about R.I.P. VII. What is that, you ask? R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril is a “challenge” organized by Carl V from Stainless Steel Droppings, although he doesn’t like calling it a challenge: 

While I don’t have any personal grudge against folks challenging themselves to read a certain number of books, or books outside their comfort zone, this event is primarily about the great pleasure that can be found in embracing this type of fiction/non-fiction during this season of the year.

The season goes from September to end of October, and invites us to enjoy books or television/movies that fall into spooky categories (Mystery, Suspense, Thriller, Dark Fantasy, Gothic, Horror and Supernatural). 

There are different Perils depending on how you want to participate, and I’ve chosen “Peril the First” which involves me reading 4 books that fall into the genres mentioned before. I checked my reading progress this year, and it didn’t seem farfetched to go for this number, and I had a couple of books either in my bookshelf or in the library waiting to be read, so voilà! 

For the first time I will have a stricter list of books that have to be read in a limited period of time, and they are:

•  The Taker by Alma Katsu
•  The Tale of the Body Thief by Anne Rice
•  The Passage by Justin Cronin
•  Miss Peregrine’s home for Peculiar children by Ransom Riggs
•  Black Heart by Holly Black

That’s more than 4 you say? Well…yeah, but the last three I’m taking from the library, and they are all taken right now, so I’m not 100% sure I will get them on time. I also have a couple “jockers”

               Anna dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake (this one I might buy this weekend, because is on sale)

         Complete Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe…but A) I’ve already read most of the tales in this version, even though I wouldn’t mind re reading them. B) is a 842 pages, so I could only read it at home. This could mean not being able to finish 4 books in total. 

           Four Past Midnight by Stephen King...same problem as the one before

Anyway, I will keep you posted, as soon as I finish The Ice Princess I will start the challenge officially. I thought I could count it as part of the challenge, but I think is more of a crime novel, with some dark twists…so I'm not sure about it.
